About the Role

Fivetran is building data pipelines to power the modern data stack for thousands of companies.

We’re looking for a Director of Quality Engineering to lead our quality engineering group of 40 Managers, SDETs, and Manual QA Engineers.

This is a full-time position based out of our Oakland office.

Technologies You’ll Use

The primary technologies we use are Java, Python, C, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure, Postgres, GitHub, Buildkite, and Docker. We use a large variety of other technologies to build and test our connectors.

What You’ll Do

As the Director of Quality Engineering and a fervent leader of quality, you will join our Platform Engineering Team to oversee all things relating to quality at Fivetran. In the next few years, you will drive the vision, strategy, and implementation to drive our 10x growth from 2,500+ customers to 25,000+ customers. In this role, you will identify, design, implement, and run projects responsible for elevating Fivetran’s product quality.

Your responsibilities will include all facets of delivering a high-quality and high-availability customer and software engineering experience, including the pre-production and collaborating with other engineering teams. Lastly, being an engineer at heart, you are also passionate about building strong relationships across the engineering team to communicate, drive and implement our Fivetran’s quality goals.

As Fivetran’s Director of Quality Engineering(QE), you will be responsible and accountable for:

  • Quality Vision & Strategy: Leading quality engineering teams to craft, design, orchestrate, and deliberate a product quality vision and strategy.
  • Quality Practices: Leveraging QE methods and best practices that apply best considering Fivetran’s architecture and infrastructure to ensure bugs and incidents in production are minimized. Alternate effectively between test automation, exploratory and scripted testing to uphold product quality.
  • Quality as a Product Feature: To maintain, monitor and improve our industry-leading goal of delivering a 99.9+% uptime, better the resilience of data pipelines, improve the accuracy and usefulness of customer-facing logs and error messages, and many more.
  • Developer Systems & Experience: You will lean on demonstrated prior experience in setting goals for the efficiency of continuous integration by leveraging systems, test automation for iterating quickly during the development cycle. You will own and drive automation deliverables, including tools and library development.
  • Standard Components: QE platform includes common components such as our data pipeline testing framework, CI integration tooling, pipeline benchmarking, and such, you will own and drive automation deliverables, including tools and library development.
  • Process Ownership: Own, iterate, and operationalize incident & bug management postmortem while accelerating adoption of feature release checklist, risk analysis framework to build a quality first culture within engineering.
  • Top-Notch Quality Team: You are leveraging your proven track record of hiring and integrating expert, passionate leaders and architects and integrating them into the team.

Skills We’re Looking For

  • Experience in building and managing a quality engineering team of 40+ members comprising managers and individual contributors with varying experience levels.
  • Experience in identifying product quality gaps and influencing product teams to drive projects to fix quality gaps.
  • 10+ years of experience working in engineering leadership roles.
  • Believer in a data-driven approach in strategizing, prioritizing and driving implementation changes coordinating with UX, Product Management, Engineering Team, and Customer Support
  • Adept at auditing and improving quality practices across the organization, ensuring integrity and transparency
  • Proven strong people management and career development skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and articulate effectively with technical founders and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • A high degree of confidence and level of comfort in discussing architecture and technologies with product development architects
  • Ability to travel internationally (EMEA, APAC) for 2 weeks once in 6 months.

Bonus Skills​

  • Experience in building and/or testing data pipelines or data processing platforms
  • Experience in the development and implementation of product features

This range represents base salary only and does not include incentive for sales roles, equity, or benefits, if applicable.
