We are open to individuals based in Canberra or Sydney — this is an in-office role.

Role Overview

The Associate Integrations Engineer is an entry-level technical role within Acorn’s Customer Experience (CX) team, built for a technically minded graduate who wants to get hands-on with real integration work from day one. You’ll support the design, build, and maintenance of connections between Acorn and the platforms our customers already rely on — HCMs, HRIS, CRMs, and productivity tools — using low-code workflow tools and direct API integrations. This is a genuine launchpad role for someone who wants to grow into a specialist at the intersection of SaaS technology and customer delivery.

5 key capabilities for this role

The best part… we use our Acorn software at Acorn. We believe in the power of our Managers and Staff being aligned on the 5 capabilities needed for each role, and the level that we expect for any given role, using our Acorn AI tool to streamline this consistently across our business. The 5 levels comprise Foundational, Developing, Proficient, Advanced and Expert.

Here are the 5 key capabilities for the role and the level expected to give you an idea of what the role entails:

  • 1. API Integration and Workflow Automation — Design, build, and maintain integration workflows that connect Acorn to customer platforms using REST APIs, webhooks, and low-code tools such as n8n, Make, or Zapier. Handle authentication, data mapping, transformation, and error handling to deliver reliable, repeatable integrations. Level — Developing: At the developing stage, you complete integration tasks with increasing independence, apply your understanding of authentication patterns, data mapping, and workflow logic to real customer scenarios, and are building the confidence to troubleshoot and iterate on your own work with light guidance.
  • 2. Database Principles and Data Fluency — Understand and apply core database concepts to support integration work, including how data is structured, stored, and queried across relational and cloud-based systems commonly used in enterprise SaaS environments. Level — Foundational: At the foundational stage, you understand basic relational database concepts including tables, keys, and relationships, can write simple queries to inspect or verify data, and are developing an awareness of how data structures in source and destination systems affect integration design and mapping decisions.
  • 3. Technical Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution — Diagnose and resolve integration failures to minimise customer disruption, maintain data integrity, and keep platform connections running reliably across customer environments. Level — Foundational: At the foundational stage, you triage straightforward integration issues with guidance, document what you find, and escalate complex problems clearly and promptly. You are building the pattern recognition needed to resolve issues more independently over time.
  • 4. Customer and Stakeholder Communication — Communicate clearly with internal teams and, over time, with customers — translating technical concepts into straightforward language and keeping stakeholders informed throughout integration delivery. Level — Developing: At the developing stage, you communicate progress and blockers clearly within the team and in written customer updates, are growing in confidence representing technical information to non-technical audiences, and actively seek feedback to sharpen how you convey complex ideas.
  • 5. Documentation and Knowledge Sharing — Create and maintain clear technical documentation covering integration configurations, workflow patterns, and known issue resolutions to support team efficiency and reduce reliance on individuals. Level — Foundational: At the foundational stage, you document your work accurately and consistently, follow existing documentation standards, and flag gaps or out-of-date content to the wider team.

Key responsibilties

  • Support the configuration and build of integration workflows connecting Acorn to customer platforms including HCMs, HRIS (e.g. Workday, BambooHR, SuccessFactors), CRMs, and productivity tools
  • Assist with authentication setup, data mapping, transformation logic, and basic error handling under the guidance of senior team members
  • Triage integration issues, document root cause and resolution, and escalate complex failures clearly and promptly
  • Validate data accuracy across customer integrations and flag discrepancies to the broader team
  • Maintain clear documentation for integration configurations, workflow patterns, and customer-specific setups
  • Support the replacement of manual onboarding steps with automated workflows as you develop confidence with the tooling
  • Collaborate with Implementation Specialists, Customer Success Managers, and the Engineering team to support smooth customer delivery
  • Participate in customer calls, building confidence in communicating technical information to non-technical stakeholders

Required experience

  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent demonstrable experience)
  • Foundational understanding of REST APIs, including JSON, HTTP methods, and how web services communicate
  • Solid understanding of relational database concepts — including tables, primary and foreign keys, joins, and basic SQL queries — gained through study or hands-on project work
  • Exposure to at least one low-code or automation tool — n8n, Make, Zapier, Power Automate, or similar — through study, personal projects, or internships
  • Basic scripting ability in Python or JavaScript, or a clear aptitude and appetite to develop this quickly
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with data, configuration, and validation tasks
  • Clear written and verbal communication — comfortable documenting work, asking good questions, and keeping a team informed
  • A genuine interest in how enterprise SaaS platforms integrate with each other and in growing a career in this space
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar) to support learning and problem-solving is a plus

Why join Acorn?

  • You’ll be joining at the ground floor of a growing technical function, with a clear development pathway from Coordinator through to Senior and Lead as your skills and confidence grow
  • We use our own product internally, so you’ll experience firsthand how a high-performance PLMS develops capability — including yours
  • You’ll work in a close-knit, high-trust team where curiosity is encouraged, learning happens in the flow of real work, and no two integration challenges are exactly the same
  • Our current stack includes n8n, AWS, and Claude — you’ll get hands-on exposure to real-world tools from day one
